Samurai Gakuen recently collaborated with Kai Analytics to analyze data about Samugaku student-teacher questionnaires. I would like to present the preliminary data here.
Types of questions asked by Samurai Gakuen teachers to students during regular check-ins:
Explanation of Themes from Samurai Gakuen Questions
1.School and Classmate relationships
Everything that concerns relationships with classmates and teachers; and everything that has to do engaging with class projects that the school requires.
2.Family Situation
This category includes the student’s behaviour towards their guardians, family composition, family environment, family issues.
3.Goal Setting (Personal, Academic and Career)
The student’s personal goal, academic goal, career goal and goal in Samurai Gakuen. This category can include long term and short-term goals.
4.Financial Concerns and Independence (Financial)
Financial concerns in case the family is facing poverty.
5.Mental Condition
Mental health. We separated this category from Physical health. To be noted: when only “health” is mentioned without specifying if it’s physical or mental we counted it as physical health.
6.Past experiences of relevance (impactful events, academic history et cetera)
Any past experiences that are relevant to the enrollment of the student and their current situation, including academic history and experiences in past schools.
7.Personal relationships and friendship (private life) and family
This category includes all the relationships that are not related to school or work, so friends outside school, how the student relates to family members et cetera. This is to differentiate school or professional relationships from private interactions.
8.Current Situation / daily life / lifestyle
Everything concerning the student’s current lifestyle and day to day life and habits.
9.Over / Under interference from guardians, codependence issues
Issues of codependence and lack of parenting. Issues with over interferent parents, or absent parents, issues of codependence where the extent is invalidating. We separated this from “Family Situation”.
10.Hobbies and Free time
Mentions of how the student spends their free time, and hobbies separated from school and part time work.
11.Physical Health
Physical health. We separated this category from mental health. To be noted: when only “health” is mentioned without specifying if it’s physical or mental we counted it as physical health.
12.Effective Social Interactions
Anything concerning good conduct, good manners, acting with awareness of the impact of one’s actions over others.
13.Lack of motivation, energy
Teachers bring this up as one of the issues with students, sometimes also mentioned as a “lack of sense of urgency”.
14.Gainful Employment
Anything part-time job or job related. (This category is for the student’s job, not their parent’s jobs).
15.Teacher’s Encouragement/Observation
Whenever the teacher mentioned wanting to support their student, we included it in this category.
16.Lack of structure
Teachers bring this up as one of the issues with students. Examples of structure could be having a routine, being able to plan the steps towards a goal and taking them gradually, being awake during the day and asleep at night.
17.Lack of communication skills
Teachers bring this up as one of the issues with students
18.Self Determination
Including image of self, self acceptance, awareness, emotional independence, making one’s own decisions.
19.Time management and punctuality
Teachers bring this up as one of the issues with students, it also includes the capability of the student to meet deadlines, punctuality.
