On Differences, Growth, and the Quiet Strength of Our Students
違いと成長、そして静かなる力を持つ生徒たち
We are all different — in personality, background, pace, and pain. But sometimes, overemphasizing our differences can make harmony difficult. I once heard that the number of things we share as humans far outweighs what separates us. I’ve been thinking about that today.
私たちは皆、違います。性格も、背景も、進むスピードも、抱える痛みも。
けれど、違いを強調しすぎると、調和が難しくなることがあります。
「人と人との違いより、共通点の方がずっと多い」と、以前聞いたことがあります。今日は、その言葉を思い出しました。
Let me share a little about what happened in our school today.
今日の学校の様子を少しだけ紹介させてください。
A new student arrived — from a prefecture far away. Sometimes, a complete change of environment is what a person needs to begin healing. Moving to a new place can shake us out of patterns we thought were unbreakable. This student made that choice. That alone is a powerful first step.
ひとり、新しい生徒が遠くの県からやって来ました。
ときに、環境を大きく変えることは、その人の人生を動かすきっかけになります。動けなかった状況や悪い習慣から抜け出すには、思い切った「場の変化」が必要なこともあります。その第一歩を踏み出したこの生徒に、心から拍手を送りたいです。
Another visitor came — a young university student who spent time observing our school. He shared his dream: to create a place of belonging for everyone. I was deeply moved. But belonging isn’t only about having space. It also requires courage — to accept the spaces we are given, and to participate in shaping them. The people and places around us can offer opportunities to grow, but we must choose to engage with them.
また、見学に来てくれた大学生もいました。
彼は、「誰にとっても居場所のある場所を作りたい」と語ってくれました。
その夢に、私は心を打たれました。
でも、居場所とは、ただ「与えられる」だけのものではありません。
その場に入る勇気、受け入れる決意、そして一緒に創っていく行動が必要です。
人も環境も、私たちを育ててくれる力を持っています。でも、その力を受け取るには、私たち自身がまず一歩を踏み出さなくてはなりません。
There’s also a student who has been with us for nearly a decade. This year, he began working, earning an income, and finding mental stability. “Why did it take almost 10 years?” someone might ask. But growth doesn’t follow a schedule. For some, it takes months. For others, years. What matters is that they keep moving, even if slowly.
10年近く、私たちと共に歩んできた生徒もいます。
今年、その生徒は働き始め、自分で生活費を稼ぎ、精神的にも安定してきました。
「どうして10年もかかったの？」と疑問に思う人もいるかもしれません。
でも、人の成長には時間の決まりなんてありません。数ヶ月で変わる人もいれば、何年もかかる人もいます。大切なのは、止まらないこと。一歩ずつでも、進み続けることです。
Many of our students are hikikomori. By nature, they are withdrawn.
Their words are few.
Their hearts are tender.
They are pure — but not always gentle.
They are kind — yet sometimes aggressive, even explosive.
This is how I, Chaa, see them. Not as broken, but as real, complex human beings.
私たちの生徒の多くは、引きこもりの経験を持っています。
彼らは、
言葉が少ない。
心がとても繊細。
純粋だけど、やさしいとは限らない。
優しいけれど、怒りやすく、爆発することもある。
これが、私茶々が見てきた、ありのままの生徒たちです。
壊れた存在ではなく、本物の、深い人間性を持つ人たち。
We involve them in all kinds of work: house renovation with professionals, harvesting apples and grapes with farmers, customer service at convenience stores, kitchen and floor work in restaurants. Life here is not just theoretical. It’s hands-on, and it’s shared. With the Caterpillar Foundation, we are making many things happen.
私たちは彼らを、さまざまな実践の場へと導いています。
プロの指導のもとでの家のリフォーム、農家と一緒に行うりんごやぶどうの収穫、コンビニでのお客様対応、レストランのホールやキッチンでの仕事。
ここでの生活は、机上の空論ではありません。すべて、現実の中で学び、動くものです。
Above all, they are like babies — not in ability, but in potential.
そして何よりも、彼らは「赤ちゃん」のような存在。
能力ではなく、「可能性」においてです。
Babies need to be loved.
They need to be fed, understood, corrected, and guided.
That’s what we do — alongside their families, and with the students themselves.
So far, so good.
赤ちゃんは、愛されなければなりません。
食べさせ、理解し、時には叱り、導いていく必要があります。
それと同じように、私たちは、保護者や本人と一緒に、少しずつ、着実に関わってきています。
今のところ、順調です。
