Rice fields, vineyards, and apple orchards have become places of learning for our students.
Throughout the seasons, students participate in planting, cutting grass, maintaining fields, caring for grapes and apples, harvesting, and many other agricultural tasks.
Agriculture teaches something that cannot always be learned from a textbook.
You cannot harvest immediately after planting. You have to return to the field, continue working, and wait.
For young people rebuilding their lives after periods of isolation or inactivity, this rhythm can be meaningful. They gradually develop routines, physical strength, responsibility, and the ability to work alongside others.
They also see the results of their work with their own eyes.
The rice grows.
The grapes develop.
The apples become ready for harvest.
And the students themselves are also changing.
With support from the Caterpillar Foundation, Samugaku is using practical work experiences to help young people build skills, confidence, and pathways toward participation in society and employment.
