Some of our training begins with places that other people might simply see as dirty, overgrown, or no longer useful.
Students have worked together to clear neglected land, cut vegetation, clean buildings, sort unwanted materials, carry heavy items, and remove truckloads of waste.
The work can be tiring. Sometimes progress is slow.
But gradually, something changes.
A space that was difficult to use becomes clean again. An overgrown area becomes accessible. A building begins to have possibilities again.
Students can physically see what their work has accomplished.
This experience teaches more than cleaning. It teaches teamwork, planning, persistence, safety, and responsibility.
Most importantly, students experience what it means to be needed.
For someone who has spent a long period disconnected from school, employment, or society, being able to say “I helped make this better” can be an important experience.
