At Samugaku, we believe that learning does not always begin in a classroom.
For some young people who have experienced hikikomori, long-term unemployment, or difficulty participating in school and society, practical work can become an important first step.
Through our program supported by the Caterpillar Foundation, students have opportunities to experience construction-related work, land preparation, and the use of machinery and tools under supervision.
Operating equipment requires concentration. Working around others requires communication. Completing a job requires patience and responsibility.
These may seem like simple things, but they are important workplace skills.
The purpose is not simply to learn how to operate a machine. Through real work, students begin to discover something about themselves:
“I can learn this.”
“I can contribute.”
“I can work with other people.”
Each new skill can become another step toward employment and independence.
