Good morning from Samugaku, Ueda! 上田のサムガクからおはようございます！
The weather is getting warmer. Some love hot weather and some do not. Good debate about the weather itself become a subject to dialogue. Seeing students talk on casual topics is mesmerizing at times as they used to keep things themselves. だんだん暖かくなってきましたね。心地よい暖かさもあればそうでない暑さもあったり。天気について軽く意見を交わし合うと、それ自体が会話になっていきます。以前は話すことがあっても心のうちに留めていた生徒たちが、自然と日常的会話をしていて、その光景に目を惹かれました。
There are two classes taught by Hata san from Samugaku, Okinawa. 今日はサムガク沖縄校のスタッフである秦さんが二つの授業をしてくれました。
Hata san talked about the islands (tousho) with the pictures in details. When he was a university student, he did an intern at the elementary school in Shuraku town/village for three years. The numbers of students were fewer than the teaching staffs back then. Caring and being with students have been teaching him to grow along the way with fishing. Afterwards, he worked at Child Consultation Center (jidousoudansho). 秦さんは島嶼について写真を使って詳しく話してくれました。彼は大学生の時、小さな集落の小学校で三年間インターンをしました。そこでは先生の数より生徒の数が少なかったそうです。そこで秦さんは釣りの楽しみと生徒との関わり方、接し方を学び、成長することが出来たということです。そしてその後、秦さんは児童相談所で働き始めました。
There, Hata san witnessed and got to know many children who were in need of protection, love and care. He had gone through certain sadden experiences until he decided to work with Samugaku, Okinawa. All the experiences help him to understand life and to see certain things from various perspectives. 児童相談所で秦さんは、たくさんの子供たちが庇護と愛を必要としていることを目の当たりにし、学びました。そしてサムガクで働くと決めるまでにいくつか悲しい経験を味わいました。そういった全ての経験のおかげで、秦さんは命、人生に対する理解を深め、物事を様々な視点から見るようになりました。
Hata san talked about various approaches to see things in life based on Pablo Picasso, a Spanish painter whose works constantly help his carrier. Then students are grouped into 3 or 4 and they are given the prints of Picasso. 秦さんは人生における物事に対する、パブロ・ピカソを元にした様々なアプローチについて話をしてくれました。ピカソはスペイン人の画家で、ピカソの作品は秦さんの仕事をずっと支えてきました。生徒は三つから四つのグループになり、ピカソの絵の写真を渡されました。
Hata san himself is not being equipped with the confidence and at times stuck with one subject which worries him. He himself isn’t sure he is the right person to stand in front of the class and to have given a lecture. Yet, he is standing in front of the student and dares to say that ‘He is not confident and he isn’t so sure how to think through when a certain thing occupies him.’ 秦さん自身は自信があるわけでもなく、時折悩まされる一つのことにとらわれてしまうといいます。自分がこうして教室の前に立って授業をするのにふさわしい人間だとも思わないと言います。けれど秦さんは生徒の前に立ち、勇気を持って「自分には自信がないし、何か悩みごとがある時、どう考えたら良いかわからなくなる」と言いました。
I am sure that Hata san and his personality have been a great encouragement for them to be the way they are and the way they are can be a great help for the community and society and Japan. 秦さんと秦さんの人となりは生徒たちにとって、どう生きていったらいいのか、どう社会や日本の役に立っていくのかということの大きな励みになってきたに違いありません。
Our principal Wataru sensei talked on the subject Self- Recognition. Seeing the same things can be so varied depending on the beholders. Self- Recognition of oneself can be varied and changed over times. 上田校の校長、渉先生は「自己認知」について話をしてくれました。物事は見る人によって変わります。自己認知もまたその時々によって変わっていきます。
Wataru sensei made us a big circle and encouraged us to see one or two good points of individuals. To my surprise, Wataru sensei could bring out the best in individuals during and by the class. Students could speak out in a find manner and in a relaxed way by the lead of Wataru sensei for an hour. 生徒含めみんなで大きな輪をつくって、それぞれの良いところを一つ二つ挙げるよう渉さんは言いました。驚いたことに、渉先生はそれぞれの良いところを授業によって、引き出していきました。渉先生のリードで、生徒たちはリラックスしながらも礼儀正しく、一時間にわたって互いの良いところを話すことができました。
Our students are quite reserved and quiet in general. Yet, each student could make compliments for other students automatically in the class. A few students could come up with compliments towards all the students naturally and effortlessly. Those students touch my heart dearly. サムガクの生徒は、普段とても物静かで無口です。けれど生徒たちはそれぞれ他の生徒への褒め言葉をどんどん話していきました。何人かの生徒はそんな褒め言葉を苦労する様子もなく、ごく自然に全員の生徒へ話すことが出来ていました。私は本当に感動しました。
This afternoon, all the students prepare for Bessho onsen’s Running and Walking Event. Our school is going to volunteer for the event distributing water, pickles, sweets, cheering the runners, and giving directions/ushering. 午後、生徒全員で別所温泉のランニング・ウォーキングイベントの準備をしました。サムガクはそのイベントにボランティアと参加し、水やお漬け物、お菓子を配り、ランナーを応援し、コースを案内をする予定です。
There are many things to prepare for tomorrows. All the tasks are being divided by drawing lots by a group. Leaders of the three groups draw lots. On the piece of the paper lot, the tasks (to do things) are being written and students get things collected and loaded in the car accordingly. So much fun for the students working on according to the lots they drew! 明日に向けて準備することはたくさんあります。作業は全てクジに分けられ、三つのグループのリーダーがそのクジを引きます。クジの紙にはやる作業が書かれていて、生徒は車に荷物をそれに従って集めては積んでいきました。引いたクジに従って作業をやることは生徒にとってとても楽しいものでした。
Some of the lots are of FUN GOOFY things such as 20 push-ups, do the radio exercise, go massage to one staff for 3 minutes… Students get super excited as a result. クジの中には、20回腕立て伏せをする、ラジオ体操をする、スタッフに3分間マッサージをする、などといった面白いものも混ざっています。結果的に生徒たちは大盛り上がりでした。It is a hot day. However, it is a great learning day for all of us. 今日は暑い日でした。けれど私たち全員にとって、とても学びの多い一日になりました。
